What Is the Best Day To Move House in Ireland

Moving house is stressful. In fact, it might just be one of the most stressful things you need to do as an adult. Between packing up the boxes, organising everything, and then actually taking them from one place to another, it can be a long, tedious process.

And if you’re moving home, you’ll want to minimise the stress as best as possible. So, picking the right day of the week to do that is crucial.

We’ve got insider information on the best day to move house, pros and cons of a home move in each season, and even moving day superstitions to keep in mind. In the meantime, you can safely store your belongings with us for some peace of mind, while you get on with the rest of it!

What’s the Best Day to Move House, Traditionally?

Traditionally, the best day to move house is on a Friday. That’s because it keeps you from disrupting your work week, and you’ll have the weekend to spend unpacking your boxes and setting everything up in your new home.

While it is traditionally the best day to move, you do run the risk of being in some pretty sticky situations over the weekend. For example, if something were to happen utility wise in your old or new home, you might be stuck until Monday when someone can come out and take a look.

And, something to keep in mind — since it’s traditionally the best day to move house, it’s also the busiest. Which means you might run into moving and removal companies being booked up if you don’t get there first.

The Best Alternative Days to Move House

If Friday doesn’t fit your schedule, or you’re looking to save a quick buck, here are some good alternatives:

Monday

If you plan to move house on a Monday, you can pack and organise the weekend leading up to your moving day. And you’ll have the time to double (and triple) check to make sure you haven’t forgotten anything before you leave the old place behind (and isn’t that half the battle when it comes to moving).

Mid-Week

This is usually the least popular time throughout the week to move since it’s difficult to work around the typical work schedule.

But, if you choose any day between Tuesday and Thursday, you can more easily book moving companies or removal companies since everyone else will be waiting until Friday.

Plus, if something does go wrong, you’ll be able to get in touch with someone quickly to have it fixed (unlike on the weekends).

Sunday

If saving money is your biggest priority, then Sunday is the best day to move house, as it’s the day people like moving the least.

People steer clear of it since it’s so close to the upcoming work week. And there’s just something about Sundays, right? But it’s statistically the cheapest day to move for removal and moving companies.

What’s the Best Time of Day to Move House?

Trust us. The earlier you can start moving, the better. It’s usually an all-day affair, so plan to devote as much time as you possibly can on the day you’re moving.

Everyone will be less tired and fresher at the start of the day than they are towards the end.

Plus, if you’re hiring a moving company, the earlier in the day you book, the less likely your moving company will delay or cancel altogether.

Best Day to Move House: Superstitions Around the World

From buying a new broom to burning sage to cleanse the space, there are numerous moving house superstitions shared around the world. Whether you believe them or not, deciding on the best day to move house by these superstitions might help you avoid potential disaster, or the old, “I told you so.”

When it comes to the luckiest day to move house, most of the world is in agreement that Thursday is a safe and auspicious day to move, but here are a few other moving house superstitions to consider.

Ireland

In Ireland, there are many superstitions related to the home and moving house, and one of them is the belief that it is bad luck to exit the home through a different door than the one you entered.

According to this superstition, when you enter a home, you bring with you the luck and energy associated with that door. Leaving through a different door could disrupt the flow of energy, creating an imbalance and inviting bad luck.

India

In India, there are certain auspicious times or dates that are considered lucky for moving into a new house.

For instance, many people prefer to move during a propitious star of the lunar calendar or during a festival that symbolises luck and new beginnings.

However, it is widely believed that Fridays, Saturdays, and rainy days bring bad luck and should be avoided for move-ins.

The West

In Western culture, Friday the 13th is known as an unlucky day where anything that can go wrong, will go wrong. As a result, many people avoid planning any major events or occasions on this day, such as parties, weddings, and of course, moving home.

It’s a superstition that has been around for centuries and has become deeply ingrained in popular culture. So for those who believe in superstition, it may be best to avoid moving house on Friday the 13th.

Best Time of the Month to Move House?

Since most rental leases run out at the end of the month, everyone will be planning to move around the end of the month and the beginning of the next one.

So, if you need to save some money and make sure you’re able to book a moving company, plan to move in the middle of the month when it’s less busy.

There are also many benefits to renting self storage for your move. If you need extra space during the transition or a safe place to store valuables, you’ll need to factor this into your move date.

Best Time of Year to Move House

Deciding on the right time of the year to start ticking off your moving house checklist is especially important if you live in Ireland. Every season has its own pros and cons, and choosing the wrong one could result in drenched boxes or sky-high bills. Let’s take a look at which season is the best for moving houses.

Do You Get a Day Off for Moving House in Ireland?

Unfortunately, employment laws in Ireland don’t provide a statutory right to a day off for moving house. But before you start to worry, let’s go over what your options are.

If you haven’t booked a day off to move house from your annual leave, it’s worth having a chat with your employer to explain your situation. They might be willing to give you some extra leave or offer flexible working arrangements to help you out.

If that doesn’t work, don’t panic! There are other ways to make your move less stressful. Consider moving on a weekend or during a public holiday when you’re already off work. That way, you won’t need to worry about taking time off and can focus on settling in.

Alternatively, why not ask a family member or friend to give you a hand on the day of your move? This way, you can avoid taking time off work and still get the help you need.

We know it can be stressful, but planning ahead for the best time to move house can save you such a headache later down the road. Hopefully these moving house tips will help you with your big task ahead!
