Keep It, Sell It Or Throw It Away? Furniture Riddles
We’ve all been there. You’ve spent a lot of money, but now you’re sitting in your living room surrounded by furniture wondering what to do with it. You might find a home for that old but comfy sofa one day or perhaps that designer chair you bought a decade ago will come back into fashion. If you’re wondering whether to keep, sell or throw away your prized possessions, here are some tips to help you solve furniture riddles.
Keep it
If you love pieces of furniture, but they don’t really match your new interiors, or you’re about to move and you don’t have room for a sofa in the sitting room or a chaise longue in the boudoir, don’t feel that the only option is to chuck them away. Furniture storage is a great idea if you’re not at the point when you’re ready to part with items or you have furniture that isn’t in pristine condition, but you’re sure that one day, you’re going to get around to providing it with the TLC it needs. You should also keep family heirlooms and anything that has sentimental value. That rocking chair may not complement the style of your ultra-modern lounge, but if it means something to you, storage is an excellent option. It’s also wise to hang onto any pieces that you think you might need in the future. Even if you don’t have a use for a chest of drawers or a vintage trunk now, there’s no point in throwing them away if you’re confident you’ll use them again at some point.
Sell it
Selling furniture is a great idea if you’re keen to raise a bit of extra cash and have a clear out at the same time. If you’ve got pieces of furniture that have been stashed in a loft or hidden under piles of clothes for months on end, and they’re in good condition, it’s worth seeing if you can find a buyer. Selling could also be an option if you’ve got items that you don’t like anymore or that don’t fit with the style of your home. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure, and you can use the money you make to buy new items that will be a perfect match.
Throw it away
Many of us are reticent to part with furniture, but if you’re having a clearout, it’s good to be ruthless. If you’ve got broken furniture that is beyond repair, you’re sick of squeaky springs when you sit down on that old couch or you’ve got pieces you haven’t even seen, let alone used for years, it’s time to consider a trip to the tip. If you’ve got items that are run-down or tired, it may be possible to upcycle them, but if you don’t like the item, you don’t have the time or the inclination to give it a new lease of life or it’ll cost more to fix than to replace, chucking it away is probably the best option.
If you’ve got rooms packed with furniture, you may be thinking about whether to keep, sell or throw it away. If you’re moving house, you’re doing up a new home, or you’re trying to declutter, hopefully, this guide will help you decide your furniture’s fate.
