Who Uses Self Storage and Should You?

Is clutter getting the better of your tiny apartment? Is your home office a bit cramped? If you want to transform your space into a sanctuary of order, the ideal solution is to pack away things that take up space unnecessarily.

So when you ask, “Who uses self storage”, the answer is anyone who wants to become a savvy space-saver!

In this guide, we take a look at all the scenarios where self storage can be a game-changer, and learn about some clever storage solutions that can help you reclaim your space and your sanity.

What is Self Storage?

Self storage offers both individuals and businesses a secure space to store their belongings outside of their homes or offices. These facilities provide various unit sizes, from small lockers to large rooms, allowing you to rent only the space you need.

How Does Self Storage Work?

First, you choose the storage location you wish to rent at. Secondly, you must pick the right size self-storage unit for your needs. Finally, you must determine the period you would like to store for. Once you have decided on these variables, you can ask for a quote and then decide if the price suits you.

Once you have signed up you are provided with a key or access code, allowing you to visit your unit during facility hours.

Key Advantages of Self Storage

Self storage facilities present versatile solutions for storing sensitive items, warehousing excess inventory or preparing for a major life event.

Our Dublin-based units have several key features that make them an attractive option for those looking for extra space for a variety of reasons.

World-Class Security Measures

Many of these facilities have excellent security features so you will know your things are safe.

These include:

• 24/7 video surveillance
• Gated access
• On-site security personnel
• Secure locks on individual storage units

Accessibility

Self storage facilities often have 7-day access, easy access loading bays, elevators and trolleys available to use when you need them.

Variety of Unit Sizes

You can choose from a range of self-storage unit sizes to accommodate different storage needs. Storage facilities also offer the flexibility to upgrade or downgrade your unit as needed. Compare this to renting office space and having to be tied down with a lengthy fixed contract in many cases.

Cleanliness and Maintenance

Storing your prize linen in a cupboard could mean damage from things like moths and other pests. Storage facilities have pest control measures and are well-maintained and clean, so you don’t have to worry about insect or rodent damage.

Additional Services

The benefit of storing at a facility, or even distributing goods from your unit, is that they offer packing supplies for purchase so you don’t need to make an extra trip to buy materials.

Sometimes there is even an option to rent a moving van or removal services through local businesses partnered with the facility. This makes moving that much easier.

Who Uses Self Storage?

Whether you’re a homeowner undergoing a renovation, a student on summer break, or a business managing inventory, self storage offers a versatile solution to a variety of diverse and ever-evolving needs.

Here’s some of the most common use cases we see first-hand across our range of Dublin units here at Nesta:

Homeowners During Renovations, Moving or Downsizing

When undertaking home renovations or amid a move, homeowners often turn to self storage.

You can choose from short term and long term storage options so that you don’t have to worry about finding a home that is less than perfect.

It provides a safe, dedicated space for furniture and belongings and keeps your valuable items protected from dust, paint, and potential damage during construction work or the chaos of moving.

Students Needing Temporary Storage

University and college students frequently use self storage units during summer breaks or when studying abroad.

Students come home for the summer. Washing and dinners are done, and you get to spend some much-needed family time with your loved ones. As a student, the world is your oyster, and you have become the master of change.

Student self storage a convenient solution for storing personal items and textbooks without the hassle of transporting everything back home and ensures to keep belongings safe.

Families Growing the Brood

Babies and children, as many of us know, have a lot of stuff! Who knew such tiny people could have so many things? But, when you are completing ‘Operation Baby’ you need to make sure that you have all of the requisite space.

Buying baby furniture means that you need space. Often, many expectant parents don’t have this. Self-storage becomes the ideal solution for completing the baby’s beautiful nursery space before their exciting arrival.

Businesses Storing Inventory or Records

Many businesses, especially startups or those in ecommerce, use self storage spaces to keep inventory, equipment, or important documents.

It’s a cost-effective alternative to renting additional office or warehouse space, and it can also be used as a virtual office if your business requires it.

Travelling, Seeing the World and Finding Yourself

Travelling broadens the mind, or so we are told. Some people find themselves on a world tour and don’t come back for a couple of years. Others take a gap year and come back within a few months.

There are some who don’t have a definite home-coming date! But, the last thing that should be on anyone’s mind when they are embarking on this exciting chapter is to be worrying about their personal belongings. It makes perfect sense to find self-storage so that you can enjoy travelling the world and soaking up the amazing cultures of the globe.

With security at the very heart of self-storage facilities, it’s one less thing to worry about while you travel.

The Passing of a Loved One

Losing a family member is an emotive time. You don’t want to have to worry about finding a safe space to store your beloved’s belongings. What’s more, you don’t want to have to contemplate throwing out their things. Some things are just too hard.

With self-storage, you can have a place to visit your loved one’s belongings in a secure storage facility. But, you can also sort out their possessions when the time is right for you.

Divorce, Separation or a Challenging Life Event

A relationship breakdown can be both emotionally and logistically overwhelming, particularly when it comes to managing shared belongings and changing living arrangements.

Self-storage offers a practical way to create breathing room during this transition, allowing you to safely separate possessions, reduce day-to-day tension, and stay organised while decisions are being worked through.

A Place for Your Hobbies

We all have hobbies. There’s nothing better than indulging in your favourite pastime on the weekend.

But, when people are collectors, it can be difficult to find a secure space for their valuable collectables or sports equipment. Self-storage provides hobbyists with a cost-effective and safe means of storing their awesome collectables.

Some Other Important Benefits of Self Storage

Beyond the specific scenarios outlined above, self storage provides broader advantages that make it an appealing option for many.

Self Storage is Great for Space Optimisation

Self storage frees up valuable space at home or the office. You can declutter without getting rid of things you want to use at a later stage, or those sentimental items you can’t let go of.

A Flexible Space Solution

Self storage is flexible so you can store for as little or as long as you need.

You can also upgrade or downgrade if your needs change over time. This is useful during transitions like moving, renovating, or downsizing.

Self Storage is Cost-Effective

Storing at a facility is often cheaper than renting larger living or office spaces and will provide you with the additional space you are looking for.
