Time to clear out the spare room
Table of Contents
If you have a spare room in your home, it’s easy to start thinking of it as a sort of dumping ground. Do you have extra furniture? Put it in the spare room. Is your home overflowing with children’s toys? Into the spare room they all go, until that area of your home starts to look like an extra area of your attic. What are your options here? Well, you could simply ignore this room and pretend that it doesn’t exist but how about instead, we clean it up a little. Give it a touch of character, declutter and make it look like part of your home once more. There are plenty of ways to use a spare room once you’ve sorted through the mess. We can show you how to make your spare room the piece de resistance of your home.
Choosing A Use
The first thing that we suggest you do is empty it out. Clean everything out of it and for now, it doesn’t matter where you put it. You can put it in the hall, or in another room in your home. Don’t worry; it won’t be there for long. Once you’ve cleared everything out of the room, you’ll be able to see what type of space you’re working with. This will give you an idea of how to organise it properly. You could use it as an extra bedroom, a guest room or even a home office. It all depends on the space that you have available and what you need in your house.
Sorting Through Items
Next, you need to look at the items and pieces of furniture that you have collected in the room over the years. Think about what you want in the room, depending on the usage that you have chosen. For instance, if you are turning it into an office, you’re not going to want that extra bed. Alternately, that wooden desk isn’t going to fit with the aesthetic of a gorgeous room that guests love. You see what we mean?
Putting Treasured Possessions in Storage
You might have a lot of items and different pieces of furniture in your spare room. As we said, it can start to look a little like a rubbish heap! Only to other people. To you, we’re sure some of those items and accessories have a lot of sentimental value. Some of the furniture might even be financially valuable so you certainly don’t want to throw everything in a skip. Instead, you can sort out what you want to keep and what you want to get rid of. Rather than letting what you keep take up valuable space in your home, you could rent out a storage room.. A storage room is a great, easy way to keep extra items safe away from the house and they can be rented with as little or as much space as you require.
Keeping Everything Neat
Have you been keeping extra items in your spare room? Commonly, spare rooms are used for seasonal items such as Christmas tree ornaments. We do this so we know exactly where these items are and don’t suffer through the seasonal panic. Instead of keeping them in the spare room, put them in labelled boxes. Keep these in your attic, garage or storage room. Somewhere that they’ll be easy to find, and you’ll know exactly where they are at the busiest time of the year. You can package and label plenty of different items like this.
Making Use of the Extra Space
If you empty your room, and it looks quite small, you need to make the most of the space. One idea we’d recommend is vertical storage. If you have items or accessories that you want in the room, make sure you set up vertical shelves. These will look great and make the most out of the small area in the room.
Comfy and Cosy
Now that we’ve sorted out the room we can begin to think about filling it back up again. Rather than packing it full of items and accessories, you can use a minimalistic design. By doing this, the room will look comfy and cosy while still maintaining a wonderful sense of style. Any extra items that you want in there can still be stored in the closet or on the vertical shelves. Add a few pieces of furniture and a couple of little accessories to give the room some character.
It can be challenge to get going but once you start decluttering the spare room you will want to move on to the rest of the house. Just take it one room at a time and make sure you finish each room fully before you move on to the next. The last thing you want to do is move the clutter from one room to another without actually clearing anything out.
