Tips to getting a better night’s rest
Do you often find yourself yawning and feeling nice and sleepy, only to spend the night tossing and turning? First, you think about the fact that you’re not sleeping, and then you think about the fact that you’re thinking about not sleeping, and down the spiral you go.
While getting a good night’s sleep is essential for good health, it can be tough to get the recommended seven to eight hours every night. If you’re tired of waking up exhausted, we’ve got the tips to help you get a better night’s rest.
Create a bedtime routine
A bedtime routine can include simple activities like reading, taking a bath or meditating to clear your mind, but the key is to do these things every night in the same order and at the same time. This helps to signal to your body that it is time to wind down and prepare for sleep.
Limit screen time
You may think that a last-minute scroll through social media before sleep is harmless, but that “quick check” often spirals into an hour-long TikTok or Instagram binge. Not only does it cut into your recommended 8-hours of sleep time, but the stimulation can keep you from falling asleep, further cutting into your 8-hours. Cut off all screen time at least one hour before bed.
No night-time caffeine
This is tough if you’re a certified coffee head, but it is for your benefit. Coffee takes about six hours to completely leave your system, so if you drink a cup of coffee at 6pm, chances are you are going to be tossing and turning all night long. Swap out that late-night cappuccino for a mug of herbal sleepytime tea or warm milk.
Move during the day
Did you know that getting at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise during the day can help you sleep better at night? While morning or daytime workouts are better for sleep, not everyone has that flexibility at an office job. However, you can combat this by moving around every hour or so to keep your body active. Sometimes a little goes a long way.
Create a sleep soundtrack
If you find falling asleep with the TV on in the background comforting, turn to ambient noise apps instead. They work by playing calming sounds that help to mask disrupting noises. This can include everything from the sound of falling rain to waves crashing on the beach. Best of all, these apps are completely customisable, so you can find the perfect soundscape to help you drift off to sleep.
While noise apps and a bedtime routine are great, living in a cluttered and disorganised environment can also affect your sleep.
