Best Way to Store Christmas Decorations
The best way to store Christmas decorations is to sort items by type, wrap fragile pieces individually, use sturdy labelled boxes, and store everything in a dry, temperature-stable space.
Key principles:
- Store decorations clean and completely dry.
- Group items by category, not by box size.
- Avoid extreme heat, cold, or damp conditions.
- Label boxes clearly for easy access next year.
How to Store Christmas Decorations Step by Step
Once you’ve covered the basics, the next step is choosing the right storage setup.
The containers you use play a major role in protecting your decorations from moisture, dust, and accidental damage over time. Starting with proper storage boxes makes every other step easier and more effective, especially for items you only handle once a year.
1. Invest in Durable Plastic Storage Containers with Lids
When it comes to storing Christmas decorations, sturdy, stackable plastic containers with lids are a must-have. Unlike flimsy cardboard boxes, plastic containers protect your decorations from dust, moisture, and temperature fluctuations. They’re also more durable and easier to stack, helping you maximise your storage space. Clear containers are particularly handy, allowing you to quickly identify their contents.
For an extra layer of organisation, consider adding labels to each box. For example, you could separate your “tree baubles,” “indoor lights,” “outdoor lights,” and “wreaths” into clearly marked containers. Some retailers, like these ones from IKEA, even offer plastic storage bins with wheels, making it even easier to transport your decorations.
2. Protect Baubles and Ornaments with Ziplock Bags and Bubble Wrap
Delicate Christmas baubles and ornaments deserve extra care to ensure they survive year after year. Group smaller items by colour or type using clear ziplock bags, then place the bags into a larger container. This makes decorating your tree next year faster and more enjoyable.
For fragile or heirloom ornaments, wrap them individually in bubble wrap or tissue paper before placing them in the bags. This prevents scratches, chips, or tarnishing from rubbing against other items.
3. Prevent Tangles: Wrap Lights and Tinsel Around Cardboard
One of the biggest frustrations during the festive season is untangling strings of lights. To avoid this hassle, wrap each set of lights around a piece of sturdy cardboard. Label the cardboard with details like “white lights” or “coloured lights” to save time next year.
You can also use this method for storing garlands or tinsel. Stack the wrapped items neatly in a plastic container for easy access and tangle-free decorating.
4. Protect Your Artificial Tree with Storage Bags or Wraps
Proper storage is key to keeping your artificial Christmas tree in top condition. Invest in a dedicated tree storage bag to shield it from dust, moisture, and pests. These bags often come with sturdy handles, making it easier to transport and store your tree.
If you’re looking for a budget-friendly solution, wrapping your tree in cling film or shrink wrap can also do the trick. For trees stored indoors, a dust sheet will protect the branches from dirt and keep the tree looking lush for years to come.
5. Use Specialised Ornament Storage Boxes
Ornament storage boxes are designed to keep your baubles safe and organised. Many of these boxes feature individual compartments with padded dividers, ensuring each decoration is cushioned and protected. Stackable ornament bins are another excellent option, especially for those with extensive collections.
For particularly fragile ornaments, consider using soft cloth bags or foam inserts for added protection. This way, your cherished decorations remain intact, ready to bring joy to your home next Christmas.
6. Consider Self-Storage for Larger Collections
If your Christmas decoration collection has outgrown your home, self-storage could be the perfect solution.
Nesta offers secure self-storage units in six convenient locations across Dublin, providing a safe and accessible space for your holiday items. With flexible rates and various room sizes, you can store everything from trees and wreaths to outdoor lights and inflatable displays with ease.
Additional Tips for Christmas Decoration Storage
- Categorise and Label: Group decorations by type, colour, or room for easy organisation. Label each box clearly to avoid confusion.
- Maintain and Clean: Clean and dry all decorations before storing them to prevent mould or damage.
- Accessibility: Store frequently used items in easily accessible locations, making next year’s setup smoother.
Where Not to Store Christmas Decorations
Avoid storing Christmas decorations in places with extreme temperature changes or moisture.
Do not store decorations in:
- Attics with poor insulation.
- Garden sheds or garages without climate control.
- Cardboard boxes placed directly on concrete floors.
These environments increase the risk of mould, warping, rust, and fading.
How Long Do Christmas Decorations Last in Storage?
When stored properly, Christmas decorations can last for many years.
- Glass ornaments can last decades if protected
- LED lights retain performance longer when stored dry and untangled
- Artificial trees last longer when compressed carefully and stored upright
Is Self Storage Good for Christmas Decorations?
Self storage is ideal for Christmas decorations because it provides dry, secure, and accessible space without cluttering your home.
It’s especially useful for:
- Apartment living
- Large decoration collections
- Items used only once a year
- Households short on attic or cupboard space
One-Hour Christmas Decoration Pack-Away Plan
- 15 minutes sorting and discarding
- 20 minutes wrapping and boxing
- 15 minutes labelling and organising
- 10 minutes moving boxes to storage
This approach reduces stress and prevents rushed packing that causes damage.
