Moving in Together? 6 Relationship-Saving Tips for a Smooth Transition

So, you finally had the big move-in talk and it went swimmingly. Now what? Sure, moving in with your partner for the first time is exciting, but it can also be incredibly daunting with numerous obstacles and annoyances that’ll challenge your relationship.

For this reason, it’s important to do your research and get a better understanding of what life living together will be like before making this next step.

To save you some time Googling relationship gurus or wading through advice columns, we’ve consulted real couples and found six proven ways to make your transition into your new home a smooth one, as well as how to combine your possessions like pros.

How to combine your possessions as a couple

Moving in with someone is often seen as the ultimate test of a relationship. You learn a lot about each other when you share a living space, and that includes your belongings. It’s important to approach the process with an open mind and a willingness to compromise. Remember, your partner’s possessions are a reflection of who they are, and vice versa.

Start with the big stuff

When it comes to deciding what to keep and what to discard, start with the big stuff. This includes furniture, appliances, and electronics. If you both have a couch, for example, decide which one is more comfortable or fits the space better. If you both have a TV, decide which one has better picture quality. This way, you can create a cohesive living space that you both love.

Divide and conquer

Divide and conquer is a great home decluttering strategy. Make a list of all the rooms in your new home and assign each room to one of you. Then, go through your belongings and decide what you want to keep, donate, or discard. This way, you’re both responsible for making the tough decisions, and it’s easier to see what you have and what you need.

The one-year rule

One of the best ways to declutter is to use the one-year rule. If you haven’t used or worn something in a year, it’s time to let it go. This includes clothing, kitchen gadgets, and home decor. Of course, there are exceptions to this rule, such as sentimental items or heirlooms. For these items, it might be best to place them in a secure storage facility nearby to reduce clutter in your new home and keep them safe.

Embrace minimalism

Moving in with someone is a great opportunity to embrace minimalism. Take a cue from Marie Kondo and only keep items that “spark joy.” This means letting go of things that no longer serve a purpose or make you happy. Remember, the goal is to create a home that feels cosy and welcoming, not cluttered and overwhelming.

Compromise is Key

At the end of the day, compromise is key. You may have to let go of some items that you love, but your partner doesn’t. The important thing is to communicate openly and honestly about what’s important to you, and be willing to make compromises. Remember, you’re building a life together, and that means finding a way to merge your belongings and create a home that you both love.

6 relationship-saving tips for a smooth transition

1. Communicate openly and honestly

Communication is key in any relationship, but it becomes even more important when living together. Make sure you discuss everything from household chores to finances and personal space before taking the leap into cohabitation. This is your chance to open up with one another and be honest about your expectations. That said, you also need to be willing to compromise on certain things.

2. Create a budget together

Living together means sharing expenses, so you need to create a budget that works for both of you. Take a look at your finances and discuss how you’ll split bills, groceries, and other monthly expenses. This will help prevent any misunderstandings or disagreements down the road, and ensure that you are on top of your household payments.

3. Establish boundaries

We all want to spend more time with our significant other, and moving in together is a great way to deepen your connection and strengthen your already tight bond. However, it can also diminish boundaries and break down the independence you’ve worked so hard to build up. From the get-go, establish firm boundaries and communicate them clearly. This could mean having separate hobbies or even designated alone time during the day.

4. Divide household chores

Chores are a part of any household – including yours – so make sure you divide them fairly. Oftentimes, fights erupt because one person is taking on more than the other. To avoid this, create a chore chart or schedule that works for each of you. You can also divide the chores according to which you detest the least. With this in place, you’ll be able to keep a clean and comfortable living space with no fuss or fighting.

5. Make time for date nights

It’s always wonderful and thrilling to move in together, but the truth is, overtime you will begin to get on each other’s every nerve. To keep the romance alive and claws in, make time for date nights and plan fun couples activities that will help reignite your spark. Whether going out for dinner and a movie or planning a surprise picnic at your favourite spot, making your partner feel special will help keep your relationship strong and healthy.

6. Be patient and flexible

You will experience many changes in the first few months of living together. Some you will enjoy, like coffee on the balcony, and others not so much, like picking up dirty clothes on the bathroom floor. In these moments, be patient and flexible with each other. Remember that you’re both learning and growing together, and there will be ups and downs. Keep an open mind and a positive attitude, and you’ll be able to navigate any challenges that come your way.
